Assange calls on Obama and FBI to end their witch hunt

Item thumb
Julian Assange yesterday called on Barack Obama and the F.B.I. to end their 'witch hunt' against Wikileaks.

Assange has been at the centre of a diplomatic emergency which began 2 months ago, when the Australian journalist fled to the Embassy of Ecuador in London, to avoid extradition. He is wanted in Sweden to answer questions on alleged sex crimes involving two women.

Assange claims the allegations are merely a smokescreen in part of a wider plot to have him extradited to The United States, where he could potentially receive the death penalty.

Last week, Ecuador officially offered Assange political asylum, however British authorities have refused to grant him safe passage.

It was suggested last week that British authorities could storm the embassy under a little-known law should Ecuador refuse to hand Assange over.
