Alabama Shakes have said that Jack White and My Morning Jacket’s Jim James would be their dream collaboration.

Singer Brittany Howard said: “Yeah probably Jim James and Jack White – all together and we’d just come up with some stuff. The way Jim James arranges his songs – that’s perfect. He’s already a great songwriter and then you throw Jack White in the mix and he’s got this crazy way he plays guitar, I just feel like we’d all have a lot of ideas, it would kind of be endless.

The band have previously worked with White, who asked them to play a gig at his Nashville record store to record a single for a new line of seven inches for his Third Man Records label. The band will also support White on tour this week.

Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea and guitarist Josh Klinghoffer have spoken about working with Blur and Gorillaz mainman Damon Albarn as part of Africa Express.

The pair travelled to Ethiopia with Albarn for the project and described their experience of the country as “profound”.

Flea said: “Josh and I went to Ethiopia as part of Africa Express with Damon, who was so kind to invite us. What an amazing place it is. We met all kinds of people, artists, poets, intellectuals. It’s like another world.”

Animal Collective have spoken about the making of their new album ‘Centipede Hz’ and revealed that they wrote their new record “as a rock band in a room”.

Speaking on BBC Radio 1, Brian Weitz said that the band had “gone back to their roots” on the new record and moved away from the sample-heavy direction of ‘Merriweather Post Pavilion’.

Weitz said: “We all moved back to Baltimore, the last few records we’ve written apart and by sending each other stuff. This time we all wanted to write in the same room together. We went back to our roots and we got a little practice space in this barn on Josh’s mum’s property and it was like being a garage band again.”

Gary Numan has described relying on past successes as “self-defeating”.

“I don’t like doing too much old stuff. The thing I’m excited about is the new stuff, going into the studio to write something new is the thrill of it,” he told BBC Breakfast.

“To have success early on and spend the next 30 years seems self-defeating, but there is a debt to play old stuff.”

Numan will embark next week on his ‘Machine Music’ tour, which will celebrate his 33 years of making music with a collection of rarely-performed tracks included on the bill.

The Killers have debuted a new track online.

The band have recorded a cover of the Raspberries’ 1972 track ‘Go All The Way’ for Tim Burton’s new film Dark Shadows.

The song comes ahead of the group’s fourth studio album, which they’re currently working on in the studio.

Bassist Mark Stoemer told NME: “Stylistically, it’s pushing in more of a rock direction than the last album. But we’re also doing something we haven’t done before. It’ll definitely sound like us.”

Finally Keane frontman Tom Chaplin has said he believes Keane are “an alternative band”.

The band released their fifth album ‘Strangeland’ last week and saw it enter the UK album chart at Number One.

Asked if he considered Keane to be an alternative band, Chaplin said: “We’ve never fitted in. We’ve had our ups and downs in terms of people’s perceptions of us, we’ve never been a band who’ve ever gone with style or fashion. We’ve made records instinctively, not to keep up with anything.”

“We’ve always felt like an alternative band, it’s part of who we are, even as people we felt a bit like that.

AC/DC have said their new studio album is at least “a year or two away”.

The Australian stadium rockers released ‘Black Ice’ in 2008 and frontman Brian Johnson had previously said they’re keen to start work on the follow-up, even hinting it could be released in 2013.

However guitarist Malcolm Young said: “You know what Brian’s like. He just says things and then walks away. It’ll be a little while – a year or two anyway. I’ve been doing some jamming on some song ideas but I do that all the time, as do the rest of the band.”

“We’re still working. But we had a long rest between ‘Stiff Upper Lip’ and ‘Black Ice’, so I think we need a couple of years to recuperate and work on it a bit more.”

Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton has responded to being roundly criticised for his red card against Man City by tweeting lyrics from The Smiths.

Barton was dismissed following an off the ball incident with striker Carlos Tevez and, after he was shown the red card, responded by kicking out at match-winner Sergio Aguero before being dragged away from the pitch.

Responding to criticism aired on BBC One’s Match Of The Day, he tweeted a couple of lines from The Smiths’ ‘Still Ill’, and then quoted the ‘big nose’ line from Cemetr’y Gates.

His public fandom led to a meeting with Morrissey at Glastonbury last summer, and Barton’s since said he’ll do everything he can to reunite the band – something he may have more time to devote to given he’s facing a nine-game ban.

Jeff Beck has joined an all-star line-up for the Saturday Night Live season finale.

This weekend’s SNL season ender will see Mick Jagger host the sketch comedy series solo for the first time, but he did previously guest on a 1978 episode with The Rolling Stones.

First-time SNL performer Beck joins previously announced musical acts Arcade Fire and Foo Fighters.

Dave Grohl will be making his tenth appearance on Saturday Night Live, having also played with Nirvana and Them Crooked Vultures in Studio 8H.

Jay-Z has said that he is ‘absolutely’ going to ask US President Barack Obama to play the festival he’s staging later this year.

The festival takes place in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park on September 1st and 2nd, and the rapper said: “I’m gonna give him a call and I’m gonna try to get him to perform – do a little rendition of Al Green – but I doubt it. I think that opens up the political season. He’ll be so far into helping the world that he probably won’t have time, but I’m absolutely going to ask him.

Jay-Z is the only act confirmed to appear at the event so far.

Keane frontman Tom Chaplin has given his views on the current state of mainstream pop and has said he and his bandmates see it as their jobs to “fight against mindless, temporary pop”.

The band celebrated their fifth album ‘Strangeland’ entering the UK album chart at Number One at the weekend and Chaplin said he viewed scoring a Number One album as a triumph in today’s “Simon Cowell generation”.

Asked whether it meant more to the band to have scored a Number One album now than ever before, Chaplin said: “It does mean more. It’s a relief that people are still willing to listen to music like ours, because it’s clearly becoming a rarer thing. It feels to me like when we first started out in 2004, there were loads of bands and over the years they’ve all fallen by the wayside.”

Finally Mark Ronson has said that the death of Amy Winehouse made him end his sessions with Gossip for their latest album, ‘A Joyful Noise’.

The producer explained that he was working with the band last summer when he found out that his ‘Back To Black’ collaborator had passed away.

Looking back to last year, Ronson said her death made him realise how good the chemistry was between the pair, and he found that magic was lacking when it came to him and Gossip: “It was really strange”, he said. “It was almost like a turning point. When I found out that Amy passed I was in disbelief. I walked out of the session and I never fully came back…
