With the Oscars almost upon us once again, I thought we’d revisit the past 15 years of the Academy Awards and see where the voters got it right and wrong in selecting a Best Picture winner.

In narrowing down the list for our purposes, only the other movies nominated count so starting with movies released in 1997, our alternative list looks like this…

What did win: Titanic

What should have won: LA Confidential

James Cameron’s take on the Titanic sinking is certainly an excellent re construction of the event but the rest of the movie stinks and the Jack and Rose romance lacks any semblance of credibility.

LA Confidential on the other hand is complex masterpiece, one of the greatHollywoodmovies of the past 20 years. How it was overlooked remains a mystery but it sets the tone for many decisions made in the years since.

1998

What did win: Shakespeare in Love

What should have won: Saving Private Ryan

Yikes, Shakespeare in love is a pleasant alternate take on the life of the great playwright, but it’s as light as a feather and just as insubstantial. ‘Private Ryan’ also has detractors but it has some of the greatest film making anyone one has committed to the screen, especially in the first half hour and almost every war movie made since owes a debt to Spielberg’s technique, it’s one of the last times he was truly relevant.

1999

What did win: American Beauty

What should have won: The Insider

This is a curious one seeing as American Beauty was lauded tremendously after it was released and probably romped home with the award, but has time been kind to it? However with The Insider, Michael Mann made arguably his best film, a compelling investigation into the workings of the tobacco industry, it even features a good performance from Al Pacino who dials it down a notch to complement Russell Crowe perfectly.

2001

What did win: A Beautiful Mind

What should have won: The Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring

Not sure how this happened. Ron Howard’s A Beautiful Mind is one of his worst movies but his time was due; Peter Jackson got there in the end but the first LOTR was the best. A thrilling ride introducing a glorious and vivid middle earth, its lengthy running time flew by and properly announcedJacksonas a major force. Honourable mention for the also nominated In the Bedroom

2003

What did win: LOTR The Return of the King

What should have won: Master and Commander, The Far Side of the World

OK the Academy realizes its mistake and honours Peter Jackson for the third LOTR installment, but was it even the best of the three? On the other hand, Peter Weir, who is almost incapable of a bad movie, brings his A game to Master and Commander, a sweeping epic of life on the high seas in the Napoleonic era. Weir is seriously under rated but like a lot of the great ones, he might get his reward for the wrong film

2005

What did win: Crash

What should have won:BrokebackMountain

Nooooooooooo, the daddy of all f*** ups. Crash is a horrible little film that spends its running time pontificating about racial relations in LA using an array of deeply unpleasant characters to do so. BrokebackMountainhowever challenged audiences in a unique way while also telling a heart breaking love story, its loss definitely belongs in the Oscar hall of shame

2007

What did win: No country For Old Men

What should have won: No Country For Old Men

For the first time since Unforgiven in 1992, the esteemed members of the Academy got it right selecting the Coen’s best film; one in fifteen ain’t so bad

The Futureheads have spoken about the difficulty they faced in recording their new album ‘Rant’, describing the process as “a nightmare”.

The album, which’ll be released at the end of March on the band’s own Nul Records, is comprised entirely of acappella versions of the band’s tracks and a series of cover versions.

Frontman Barry Hyde said that each song on the album includes over 100 vocal takes and each day the band would leave the studio after recording “in a state of ultimate exhaustion”.

Asked about the process of recording ‘Rant’, Hyde replied: “It was a nightmare at times. For every single track on the album, we went into the studio full of energy, we’d get started and incredibly quickly your brain just gets frazzled. Recording like this is so intense, making 115 vocal parts work and be in tune is a nightmare. For every song we left the studio in a state of ultimate exhaustion. It took us a long time.

Jack White’s revealed further details and the tracklisting for his debut solo album, ‘Blunderbuss’.

Comprising 13 tracks, the album will be released on April 20th, and the former White Stripes man will be appearing on US comedy show Saturday Night Live on March 3rd to play tracks from it.

Earlier this month White revealed the self-directed video for his debut solo single ‘Love Interruption’. The track sees him working with singer Ruby Amanfu, who provides backing vocals, Emily Bowland on bass clarinet and Brooke Wagonner on Wurlitzer electric piano.

White’s also announced plans for his debut solo live shows, which’ll take place in March in the United States. Prior to his show at Radio 1′s Hackney Weekend in June, alongside Lana Del Rey and The Maccabees, White’ll play a number of Stateside shows, appearing in Chattanooga, Birmingham, Memphis and Tulsa.

Blur closed the Brit Awards with a triumphant five-song set at London’s O2 Arena on Tuesday night.
The Britpop legends picked up this year’s Outstanding Contribution To Music award before kicking off their set – the longest show-closer in the history of the awards – with ‘Girls & Boys’.

After moving on to an energetic ‘Song 2′, they were then joined by Phil Daniels for ‘Parklife’, played ‘Tender’ with a 32-piece gospel choir and closed their set with ‘This Is A Low’.

“The last time we were here was 17 years ago and what happened on that night had a very profound effect on our lives,” frontman Damon Albarn told the crowd after collecting their gong, before going on to thank a lengthy list of people from their label and management team. “Right that’s it. Thanks very much for putting up with this.”

Other winners on the night were, rather predictably, Adele, Ed Sheeran, Coldplay and Rihanna. Best International Group was awarded to Foo Fighters.

Part of JDIFF’s ScreenTest, Cinerama will be hosting a Q&A session for those interested in making a career in film criticism and/or radio presentation. How I research, produce and present the show will be topics of conversation and how the panel – David, Daniel, Tara, Nicola, Neil and Donald – do more than contribute to make Cinerama what it is… a really pretentious talkie overlong movie show that acts above its station.

The Q&A session is open to the public and we’d be delighted if you could come along. So if you are curious about how Cinerama makes it to air or have we recommended a movie that turned out to be horrible? Do you like The Notebook and are sick of me shooting it down every week? Air your grievances at The Lighthouse, this Thursday at 1.30pm.

ScreenTest is an industry event geared towards people who wish to pursue a career in a variety of fields around film production, performance, broadcast or animation. We are arranging a series of panel discussions with industry professionals who are going to talk about their experiences, how they got started and take questions from the audience. There will also be an element of workshop to many of the panels, with industry professionals showing how exactly to use their equipment and even giving some advanced tips.

Some of the guests conducting panels on the day will include Domhnall Gleeson, Liz Gill(director) and Mike Cockayne(writer/The Viper) of The Hardy Bucks, Tony Crounstan, Kirsten Sheridan and the cast of Dollhouse and the team behind Brown Bag Films. This event is being done in conjunction with the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland and it’s a great opportunity for people who are considering a career or getting involved in filmmaking, performance or indeed any aspect of the film and television industries.
