State Of Play, starting Jan 7th, is a brand new Thursday evening music magazine programme bringing together the best in music with discussion that promises to be insightful, witty and unpredictable. Hosted by Phil Udell, the show will be a weekly hour long exploration of not only the latest releases but also musical history, the latest news and random topics and themes!
Each week, Phil will be joined by two guests - one taken from a group of regular contributers that includes John Joe Worrall, Jennifer Gannon and Niall Byrne (Nialler9), the other from the music world at large - be it artists or industry and media figures. Together, they will debate three of the week's new album releases as well as the latest developments, trends, news or whatever takes their fancy. The monthly 'Play & Tell' feature will see a guest (or Phil!) introducing us to a gem from their own record collection, be it a long lost classic or a personal gem. Audience interaction will form a large part of the programme so do get in touch text 51051, email

Another week, another hour of musical debate (aka argument) on your radio. In the studio this week we have Jennifer Gannon, the first lady of State of Play, and Roger Quail from Rubyworks and Model Citizen Records, who had such a good time when he was on before that he demanded we have him back. The albums up for review this week are the second releases from Adebisi Shank and Klaxons, plus the umpteenth record from Cathal Coughlan.
With two of this week's releases follow ups to well received debuts, we'll also be taking a look at the 'difficult second album syndrome' and seeing if it really does exist. It certainly wasn't a problem for this lot...
In addition we'll be taking a glance back at the week's music news, looking ahead at the coming seven days and wanting to hear about your best ever gigs.

One of the biggest albums of the year is under the spotlight this week on State Of Play, as John Joe Worrall of State.ie and a Jonny Tiernan, publisher of AU Magazine join Phil to review 'The Suburbs' from Arcade Fire and discover whether it is a work of genius or just an album that is way too long.
We'll also be taking a look at the new live album from Mogwai and the second release from Gemma Ray. Jonny will be telling us how music magazines are facing the digital future and we'll be rounding up this week's music news, looking at a scene in focus and previewing the week ahead. Finally, we want to know your worst gig ever.... Text 51052 or tweet @phantom1052 with your horror stories.

Phil is off to the Field Day festival this week so Johnnie Craig steps into the breach for this week's show, joined by Jennifer Gannon and Ruan Van Vilet, head honcho of the marvellous Popical Island record label. Together they'll be reviewing the latest albums from The Coral, Best Coast and Perfume Genius.
Elsewhere they'll be discussing the week's music news, including the great Kings Of Leon pigeon unpleasantness, previewing the week ahead and finding out from Ruan just how he's created the most perfect independent pop label in Ireland.

Joining me on State of Play this week are Phantom's own Johnnie Craig and Daniel Carroll from State.ie. Together we'll be reviewing new albums from Richard Ashcroft & The United Nations of Sound (crikey), the hushed return of Bombay Bicycle Club and Wavves (crazy name, crazy guy).
We'll also be looking back on the epic history of Sub Pop Records, from the early days of grunge to their resurgence with Fleet Foxes and The Shins. For those of a certain age, this will surely get your pulses racing....
In addition we'll be discussing the great Blink 182 vs Jedward stand off, the Mercury Music Prize nominations, giving our pick of the week ahead and looking for your tenuous links with pop and rock stars.
